Commitments

Michigan Law

Michigan law states that "marriage shall be between one man and one woman." This is discrimination against all loving relationships that do not meet the requirement of one man and one woman. This state, and for that matter, the world, is inhabited with loving couples of the same sex. It also is inhabited with couples who are not interested in getting married, but who are nonetheless in relationships of lifetime commitments.

There is a growing number of organizations, businesses and institutions that recognize the discrimination and have decided to offer benefits to the committed partners of their employees. To verify the commitment, they sometimes ask for notarized documentation of the status of the couple, as a couple.

No, this is not a legal marriage. It is a notarized document, obtained from your employer, for the purpose of gaining benefits for your loved one.

  • Shout It to the World!

This is a celebration of Love and it should be shouted to the roof tops of your community. When two people fall in love it should be celebrated. I want to make this moment in your lives moving and meaningful.

"Love is the most powerful thing
    in the world,
yet Love exists only in your mind.
Love isn't something you can touch,
    but you can feel Love.
Love isn't something you can smell,
but Love can stop your breath.
Love isn't something you can see
    with your eyes,
yet you can fall in Love at first sight.
    Love is just an idea
that you create in your mind
to express a feeling inside you
    that
    you can't explain,
    don't understand and
    have no control over.
Yet Love can take complete control
    of all your senses,
    make you do things
    totally against your better judgment
and make you act like a fool.

Love is the most powerful thing in the world."

-Rev. Kirk Haas, a poem for my lover, my wife.

Why a ceremony?

Because a notarized document is

a cold way to commit to someone whom you love

with all your heart.

In the event that the State of Michigan repeals it's discriminatory law banning same-sex marriage, we at Secular Ceremony Services will begin performing marriage ceremonies to the loving couples that ask.
